Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) examinations
are available for breeding and show dogs. The CERF examination is
used to screen dogs for inherited (or genetic) eye diseases. Individuals
desiring a CERF examination for their pet should arrive at the clinic
20 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment time to allow for
completion of the necessary forms and pre-examination application
of eye drops.
The AKC, tattoo or microchip numbers are required for completion
of the examination forms, so please bring this information with
you. The examination itself takes about 10 minutes and
includes assessment of the front of the eyes with a slit-lamp biomicroscope
and the back of the eyes with an indirect ophthalmoscope. Owners
will receive a copy of the examination form which can be mailed
to the CERF organization for registration. Annual CERF examinations
are required to keep registration current.
